For those musical judges out there... What's process/thoughts are going through your head while listening to a recorded piece? Do you take in consideration the stupid and accidental mistakes made?

I'm not a judge, but I know the first thing I'd listen for is a player who can get past the notes and play the music. I hear so many performers these days that seem to be at war with the piece.
For a recording, though, if there are lots of stupid and accidental mistakes, I might hope to do another take...

When judging, I can tell if a mistake is a finger slip or just poor preparation.
However, if a student submits a recording with "studid or accidental mistakes" (your words), it tells me either:
1. The selected piece(s) may be too difficult for him/her.
2. Their technique is insufficient.
3. They don't care enough to take the time to make an acceptable recording.
4. All of the above

Those so-called mistakes are, to me, most often the most interesting moments, where predictability and eveness get warped. Yes, Alex, as O. Coleman said, let´s play the music and not the background - though there´s quite several handfuls of fascinating 'backgrounds' at that, so to say.

That's fine, but it's not what this thread is about, unless you are the judge, and if you have been the judge where mistakes are evaluated for their inherent "worthiness" (whatever that means - after all, this is a thread about judging, not anything else), would you care to discuss how in fact you did judge them?

I'll never forget at the ICA Competition in Belguim (1993) Deplus gave a finalist I was coaching a 1 out of 5 on Dynamics and Incenzo gave the same student a 5 out of 5 on Dynamics.
Incenzo loved it, Deplus hated it.
