The Clarinet BBoard

I just dropped by a local used merchandise store and they have an old clarinet for sale. I must admit my only hands-on experience is with the Bb horns so I don't really know anything about this one. Here is a brief run down: It is made by Boosey and Hawkes but distributed by Lafleur. It is wooden. It measures, at my best guess, about 20 inches long. The body is one piece with a separate barrel, mp and bell (cracked). It is so small that I can barely fit all my fingers on the keys at the one time. They are asking 89.00 (CDN) but the way this store works, the longer it sits the cheaper it gets. (Incidentally, this is the same place I bought a 1995 model Buffett E-12 (in excellent shape) for a mere 119.00 (CDN)so they really don't know their horns. How sweet it is!)
I am not really planning on buying this instrument because, more than likely it will need some work - which I can ill afford at this time. I am just curious about it and if it is something worth looking into I will wait a while and then make a ridiculous offer.
Thanks for any assistance,
Sean

From your description, it may be an Ab clarinet. They are shorter than the Ebs and finger placement is very close. I might be interested in buying it if you decide not to--let me know more.

It "sounds" like an Eb to me. I'd suggest buying it as cheap as you can, by mentioning the cracked pieces, and at least one of a number of us on the BB [auction?] will "bail you out" for the cost, if you dont want to "fight the repairs" . Is it a Boehm system , like the Bb you are acquainted with? Don

The Ab is shorter than the 20" measurement quoted in the original post so I would guess that it is probably an Eb soprano clarinet. An Ab should be somewhere close to 13" or 14# in length.
Is it Boehm system? Is it in current modern pitch (ie. LP)? Or is it new enough that this probably isn't a concern?

It definitely has the Boehm system. I did not think to to look for any indication of it being LP and I also failed to record the serial number. I really couldn't make an educated guess at the age other than the fact that it ain't new!
