Mark! Would this Saxonette you refer to earlier be a metal clarinet, curved like an alto sax? If so, it may be what a lady described to me couple months ago. I assumed she was confusing an old curved soprano sax for a clarinet as I never have seen or heard of one around here.

Willie - I have no clue! What I wrote was directly out of The New Langwill Index.
Willie -
I've never seen a completely metal clarinet curved like a soprano sax, but have seen at least 2 Bb (soprano) clarinets in alto clarinet format, with a standard body, a curved metal barrel and a curved up metal bell. They played pretty badly, but were not in top condition.

There have been experimental instruments that tried to straddle the line between clarinet and saxophone. See my posting at http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?id=1869

It's possible that what I remember as "Octanette" was actually "Saxonette." It was all wood and, at least as I recall from many years ago, was in a "U" shape like a small bassoon. As I said in the earlier posting, it was not a satisfactory instrument, as a clarinet, a saxophone or on its own.

Best regards.

I knew I should have bought that one in Houston some 45 years ago. Believe it was conical, like a sax, not a clar. Prob is described in some books. Don
