I know, I know...all of you are probably going to say Vandorens are odd to begin with, but I just opened a box of Vandoren Black masters. Nine were the usual reeds and marked with the Vandoren stamp. However, the tenth reed, which happened to be the best in the box, did not have the Vandoren stamp and was marked only "Superiere" in very small letters vertical to the reed at the butt end. Any ideas what this might be?

You got the famous "one good Vandoren reed out of 10" that everyone always talks about, but no one ever really finds.
Occasionally, Vandoren lets one of those reeds slip into the US just to keep people searching and buying.
If I were you, I would purchase a lottery ticket tonight... GBK (who said "au revoir" to Vandoren and "hola" to Gonzalez)

Perhaps this was really a Cracker Jack box with the "prize".

Some cute & funny comments!
I'm sure by now that you've noticed on other Vandoren reeds, the words above the "Vandoren" stamp, "France Superieure."
The people at the Vandoren factory were probably having a "happy day" when your reeds were made, so the stamp slipped, and all you got was "Superieure."
BTW:
My old Vandoren's do not have the strength # on the back like the newer ones. If you box is really old, perhaps you're also missing the strength #'s?
Good luck searching for that "Superieure Vandoren."

I have no problem getting 9 out of 10 Vandy's to work...I simply follow the Opperman reed book and go from there. As to the marking the machine ink may have run out during the pressing of the stamp on the end of the production line....
I have had less success with FOF Gonzalez than Vandorens... I find the Vandoren reeds to have a nice dark sound and last very long with proper break in.
