 Teacher change and thoughts....
Author: toney

I was wondering what you're thoughts on the pros and cons are on teacher changes and retirements midway through schooling??

I am particularly wondering from those who have experienced this at a major college/university or conservatory. Do you feel that this drastically affects your performance study, and if so how? Should one avoid being placed in this situation all-together??

Any thoughts would be helpful and thanks!

My first private teacher at college left after a semester (got an orchestra gig out of state). While I miss his input and help, I've also found it very valuable to have a few different influences. I've actually learned a great deal about the clarinet from one of my directors, a saxophonist. While it takes time to get to know a new teacher and work well with them, I wouldn't go out of my way to avoid switching teachers.

A point of view exists that 4 years (college/university) is a long time to study with any Teacher. I suppose that for some 4 years is way too long, for others just about right, & still for others not nearly a long enough time.

... it really depends on the Teacher & the Student.

I studied with Clark Brody for a total of five years including pre-college, and was switched by the university to Russell Dagon for my senior year. Even after that much time, there was and still is more I could learn from Mr. Brody, but getting a different perspective from another accomplished clarinetist was a positive experience as well.

If you come to a university to study with a specific clarinetist, and that person leaves for reasons other than outright retirement, you certainly have the option of following that individual to his/her new assignment. In the case of retirement, my observation has been that teachers have a pretty good idea when they are going to bow out, and start reducing their studio load gradually so that they aren't taking on new students that would be left in the lurch.
