Hi all, I have noticed that several major retailers offer "shop checks" and
"play tests" on their websites and catalogs on the R13's they sell. Is this a marketing thing to get people to buy R 13's, or is it such that they tend to need more tweaking from the factory than other comparable models of different manufacturers? I was just curious, as I have not seen this offered on other models such as a Concerto II . I don't mean to be a dummy, but what makes the R 13's get the special treatment over other horns of comparable cost. Any thoughts would be most welcome. Ted in Virginia

"Hmmm... is there a clarinet in the case?"
"Check."
Don't believe everything you read.
The bottom line really counts.
If you can't return it (at the seller's expense) it may not be a great deal.
There's a strong incentive to purchase locally, or take a drive, when getting something so personal as your next instrument.
That being said, I play a Ridenour Hard Rubber clarinet.
I've played three and they're VERY similar.
I think the R13 has too much "character" and the variance can be working either for you or against you. A good technician can tune up your inexpensive instrument for optimal response and tuning, but the underlying tone is pretty much set at the factory...
Save yourself some trouble (and $$); buy from Dave Spiegelthal...
