 DDS System?
Author: Ben
Date:   2004-05-20 11:53

I am now watching Good Morning America and they are doing a segment on the DDS System...it's like a retainer people put into their mouth to make their mouth smaller, and take smaller bites of food, and ultimately loose weight.... how desperate are people to loose weight? Don't people have any self-control or discipline anymore?

However, I was wondering how something like this might affect the air stream when playing the clarinet. Since the idea behind an arched tongue is the speed up the air stream (like saying ee), wouldn't a lower roof of the mouth produce the same or a similar effect?

Has anyone playing with and without a retainer noticed any differences?

Easy statement for those people who don't currently have the need to lose weight ...

Talk to me again when you need to lose 25 pounds.

I realize some people may have a genetic disposition to being overweight (the obesity gene, etc.), and there are many other influences to what may cause this, but with the vast majority of the population (in the US, at least) of all ages being slightly or severely overweight, I do think lack of self control and discipline are strong contributors.

When I was in middle school I was about 40lbs overweight. When I finally got sufficiently tired of being overweight, I started exercising more and being more contentious about what I ingested. It took about a year, but I achieved my goal, and have had no problems staying healthy in the many years since. Most other people can do the same if they really want to badly enough, but when it isn’t a very important goal to them they will likely make excuses for why they failed or found the goal to be unobtainable….”Wasn’t I suppose to loose 30lbs in 30days with no dieting or exercise like the famous person on TV said? Perhaps I should try one of those quick-fix surgeries…”

With fast food, oversized or all-you-can-eat portions in many restaurants, and the lack of interest most people have in any kind of exercise (not when you can watch TV or veg on the couch), this leads to continuously degrading bad health. Sure there are many factors which lead to someone needing to loose weight, but aren't most of those factors within one's control? Everyone makes choices in life, but few people are willing to accept or recognize the impact of the choices they make!

So, if you are bitter about needing to loose 25lbs and how difficult it seems, take it one day at a time, and make sure each choice you make is the best one possible!

Easy for you to say,Ben. In my opinion(and experience) there is more to controlling one's weight than self control. People do vary in many ways. In general the overweight problem is due to physical activity level below caloric intake level....for a person's particular metabolic rate. The fact that it's more than "self control" is the reason diet books are always on the Best Seller list. These books, however, should be in the Fiction category rather than Non-Fiction. As far as the mouth inserts are concerned....my opinion is that they won't help clarinet playing. I say this having tried to play with a temporary dental appliance in place and slobbering all over the place.

Hey, someone answer the question about the DDS and effect on airflow and sound of the instrument. Visit http://www/ibpignout.org/html. for discussion of the other stuff.

I don't think it would help. If the DDS device is so big you can only take tiny bites of food, I think it would make the clarinet nearly impossible to play.

For example, I switched from a Morgan mouthpiece (with a duckbill shape) because I thought it reduced the air chamber in my mouth too much, giving me a less colorful sound.

When I took a small chip out of a front tooth several years ago, it took me several months to get used to it.

I notice a significant change (I think an improvement) when I to from single to double lip.

And, at any rate, what I, at least, am looking for is the ability to make many good tones, and not just one:

This involves using many different positions of the lips, tongue and soft palate:

The DDS device, even if it made an improvement, would limit me to one possibility.

Best regards.

Not bitter, and not 25 pounds. I wish it were just 25 pounds ...

I had relative ease giving up smoking 20 years ago ... but I sure as heck know that other people have extreme problems giving up smoking. If people don't think that food is just as addictive than many other drugs then they need to do a bit of reading.
