Wow ... we were fortunate enough to hear the Gala Broadcast from the L.A. Philharmonic in their new Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday afternoon here. An interesting program indeed. After hearing the Met play the Rite of Spring (with some shoddy violing playing) it was fantastic to hear this incredible orchestra perform the work ... dare I say it flawlessly. I hope others of you heard this broadcast, too ... I'm looking forward to the next two Sundays.

diz -
I heard the inaugural Disney Hall telecast in October and thought the orchestra was fabulous, particularly the Rite of Spring. Was this a repeat or a new concert? It has to be a repeat, since they wouldn't do a piece like the Rite twice in a season.
My only criticism was that the opening bassoon solo sounded too easy. Stravinsky said he intended it to sound almost impossible, but bassoonists quickly learned to make "Rite reeds," and if he could do it over again, he'd write the solo even higher.
If that's the worst that can be said....
Best regards.

ken ... you are right it was from the October opening, I agree the LA Phil's playing was superb, I thought the opening bassoon solo was beautiful and flaweless.
I love the look of the new concert hall, have you seen it at night time? Metal tends to turn black in the dark and is notoriously difficult to light. Not a criticism, by the way, I think it's beautiful and sweeping/soaring in style.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

As long as you don't live across the street
I read an article in the LA Times a couple months ago about people who live in an apartment building nearby and have a horrific glare.
Otherwise, I really need to get down there for a concert.

Speaking of Rites..has anyone heard the Monteux version with the Paris Conservatoire from the 50s??
...it is very violent and not as smooth as some of the modern ways we do it now...maybe we are doing everything too easily...
this is a great version...

Some years ago I heard the Monteux "Rite" on a recording borrowed from the public library --- as David Dow says, it was rather violent and 'raw', but powerful and exciting and probably truer to the spirit of the music than modern, smoothed-down performances (as Someone Who Knows pointed out, this piece is 'old hat' to most orchestras nowadays and possibly the passion just isn't there anymore). And speaking of the Paris Conservatoire orchestra, I have a recording of Tchaikowsky's 4th by them (I forget the conductor's name, Albert or Alfred ______? I believe) --- one of the most exciting renditions I've heard, though not the most technically perfect by any means --- perhaps because that orchestra is a 'student' ensemble they play everything with a bit more fire than the jaded (please forgive the term!) professional groups? Sort of akin to the difference (in the US) between college and professional basketball.............

The more I listen to this work (my favourite 20th work) the more I hear so much other Stravinsky in it ... especially Petrushka. My (crappy) Kalmus study score of the Rite was the first orchestral score I ever purchased ... still own it and it's now very, very faded and jaded around the edges (like me).
One day I must see if there's a "better" edition out there than the Kalmus.

Thanks, D Dow. I love Monteux but have never heard his recording of the Rite.
Wasn't the original performance of the Rite (Paris c. 1912-1913) done by a brash young conductor named Pierre Monteux?
