As you can probably tell from the title, I am willing to dive into the so called "evil land of eefers". Well, sort of. Anyways, I am a total newbie so I am at square 1.
1) Where would be a possible place to find a nice Eb clarinet for a little more or less that $300? I guess that is quite a limiting budget, but I don't know anything, like I said. As of now, that is the most I can spend on an eefer.
2) My teacher does not trust anything but Buffets or Leblancs. It gets a little frustrating after a while. Are there any brands that she should be forced to look at? I've heard a lot of good things about Amatis and the price range is wonderful and calling me. I don't think there's anyway to convince her though. Any ideas?

I've been playing on a Leblanc eefer for the last two years and I love it! Albeit, I've never played on anything else, but I've always had good luck w/ response and the intonation has gotten better as I've gotten better. It's a very old one, but it still works well! I understand that you're having these brands shoved down your throat, but don't discount them because of that.

For about $300, more or less?? Generally, you "get what you pay for" but in effers, you can get a pretty decent playing, used Selmer Bundy within that price range. I have a pro level Yamaha that I now use exclusively, but I still have my Bundy effer that plays almost as good. The tone qualities are quite similar, the main difference being that the Yamaha is easier to play in tune (yes, I mean't IN tune). For the money, a Bundy Resonite Eb clarinet is hard to beat and almost as "easy on the ears" as its' more expensive pro level cousins. Any Eb clarinet--no matter how expensive or "tweaked"--can easily become a WMD in the hands of the wrong player. But the "right" player can sound like the pro they are on a Bundy effer--it just takes more effort. The Bundy effers are, at least, worth considering given the finacial perameters you have set forth.
(BTW, WMD: weapon of musical destruction)

I got a Selmer Bundy used eefer for less than $100 on ebay. It required 2 new pads and a new cork, and I also bought a new mouthpiece, making my total expense less than $200. This particular instrument sells new for ~$600, so I think I got a reasonable deal, and the instrument seems to play in tune as well and is one that our local tech is willing to work on. It's not a pro instrument, but it's perfectly suitable for high school and community band. I'd recommend avoiding no-name new eefers that are really cheap (you'll see those on ebay also)...as at least the tech we go to won't work on them.
Have fun!

I've been considering eBay as an option, but I've been yelled at for even considering it because it's probably "junk". I personally think that you can find some decent items, but you know, whatever. I'm going to be using it for my high school band (hopefully). Is it hard to adjust, or is it if you practice on it, you'll get used to it pretty easily? I was thinking about it and I was thinking, "Wow, the mouthpiece must be pretty small. I wonder if it'll be a lot different than the regular Bb clarinet..."
Thank you for your insights and keep them coming!

Of course, what you're looking for may be an Amati - I believe Graham's Music may be a source.
I found one when on holiday in Prague ! beautifully made and play in tune. Add a Grabner m/p and there you have it. Sweet as a nut !
Search on "Amati" above for more info. Several of us are proud owners of Amati instruments.

I'm very limited on cash and power for decision making. My parents are very much against eBay because they think I will get scammed, etc. I know that happens, but not all the sellers are like that, are they?

A very helpful Mr. Portilla has found a Freres Eb clarinet, but he suggested I ask the honorable BBoard what you guys think. So... what are your opinions?
Thanks,
