Can someone tell me what type of clarinet system a Finnish orchestra would use?

All the Scandanavian player's I know of play Boehm. Kari Kriikku certainly does. http://webusers.siba.fi/~kkriikku/

On the other hand, Osmo Vanska's recording of Crussell sounds a bit Oehlerish, and I've never seen a photo of him with a clarinet.

Best regards.

Ken - I look at the link that says "pictures" (at the bottom of your web site) looks like a german system clarinet there to me ... I could be mistaken ...

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

diz- yes, you're mistaken. Kari plays Buffet. I think one can see that quite clearly in the pictures too?

yes - I just clicked on the image again and loaded the larger sized image, very definitely a Boehm clarinet ... whether it's a Buffet or not is totally irrelevant.

"whether it's a Buffet or not is totally irrelevant"

I just happen to know that Kari Kriikku plays Buffet. Buffet only make Boehm instruments these days!

He plays a Festival. Every professional player in Finland and in the rest of Scandinavia play French system today. My precursor in the RSPO played Oehler. The last Oehler player just retired from the Opera.

Liquorice -

If you're Woody Allen, Buffet will make a one-off Albert system for you. And Yamaha started making Oehler clarinets for Michele Zukovsky.

Best regards.

Kari Kriikku plays a RC Prestige (not Festival).

Osmo Vänskä plays a Selmer, probably the newest Privilege.

Christoffer Sunqvist, 1st solo of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, plays on Buffet, I have seen a Vintage and a Prestige.

In any case, in all videos and on all photos I have seen, scandinavian (danish, swedish, norwegian, and finnish) players use Boehm, if not Buffet. There might be exceptions.

I’d be more interested in what mouthpieces they use. They have a distinct style of playing I find very attractive. Both warm and very flexible.

In Denmark Lee Morgan plays on Buffets. Not sure about the other countries.

Fernie, the most common mouthpiece in both Finland and Sweden is the Vandoren B40, and also some of the top players use it.

I just came back to the States after 7 months of living in Finland and studying at the Sibelius-Akatemia. Most people are using Buffet — usually RC or Festival, but some other models too. (Never encountered any R13s/R13 Prestiges; some students didn't even know about those models.) Some prominent players are using Schwenk und Seggelke as well.
As far as mouthpieces go, the vast majority of people are using Vandoren B40; some are using BD5, B40 Lyre, or mouthpieces by other makers.

Denmark too seems to have a love affair with B40, and I've worked with a couple of Principal clarinets who sounded AMAZING on BD5 (both with jobs in top level international orchestra, here in "acting" capacity while the orchestra spends years deciding who to appoint principal)

It is my impression, from photos, videos, websites etc. that the BD5, B40 and B40 Lyre, maybe also B45 or B45dot are the most popular mouthpieces in Europe.

And Buffet RC / RC Prestige, Festival and Tosca the most popular clarinets in Europe (outside Austria/Germany). In particular, Italy seems to be an RC / RC Prestige country (though the famous Alessandro Carbonare plays a Selmer Recital (and, as far as I know, a B40)).

But as I said, I only conclude from presentations in the internet.

Does anyone know what the clarinet player in the Helsinki Philharmonic Society would have used in 1902 for Sibelius II?

Tony
