 After All-State

What comes after all-state? Is it all-national band? I'm just curious if there is really such a thing as the national symphony youth orchestra, or the national band. Can you imagine how hard that would be to judge the top clarinetists from each state? Everyone would be so good!

There is All-Eastern. A friend of mine went and wasn't overly impressed (though being from New York, we were used to a high-level All-State). I suppose there must be an All-Midwest and All-West and everything but I don't really know.

Seriously, though, these things don't matter much. If you enjoy doing them, go ahead. If you don't, don't bother, and if you don't get in, don't let it bother you too much. Auditioners care much more about how you play than where you've played.

The way All-East used to work (I graduated HS in '87, the year you were born?) was that you automatically made All-East the following year if you made All-State as a junior or sophomore. Michaela is right in saying that it might not be all that much higher quality than states. I went to college with people who made all-east, and they were just a bit better players than I was at the time, but none of them was ever first chair at my college.

Sometimes I look back and think "only 3 more points, and I woud've made All-East, too" since I was 2nd chair at Regionals my junior year, but you know what? IT DOESN'T MATTER in the big scheme of things. At my age (34, LOL) I feel very lucky that I've continued to play my clarinet in community ensembles, even though I wasn't a music major. Music is one of thoes "life skills" that you'll always have as a part of you. You know things that a non-musician never will know, whether it's specific to clarinet playing, or the emotional joy of performing in front of an appreciative audience.

Good luck! :)

I'm not sure what would be considered after all-state, I've been to honor band every year but, being diabetic, seem to become rather sick when all-state auditions come around. Something like WIBC maybe? Went there earlier this year, which was a amazing experience. I guess it's questionable.

For high school players, the next step is summer music camp -- Interlochen, for example.

When I was at Oberlin, I played in an Ohio, all-college band for the state band directors' conference, but it was much more informal than high school all-state, and I think they dropped it. By that point, the people in conservatories are concentrating on orchestral playing, and band is considered unsophisticated. -- even wind ensemble is slightly disreputable.

It's a pity. I had more fun on the outside expeditions than any other time.

Best regards.
