 Chip Question
Author: wjk
Date:   2004-01-31 18:45

While putting the upper joint of my Buffet R-13 into the case, I accidently hit the metal strap buckle. I notice a tiny chip on the outer part of the upper joint, where the barrel attaches. There is no crack. Will this chip be a problem? (it is so tiny I can't even find the piece that chipped off). I feel like an idiot!

I seriously doubt it, if there indeed is no crack. But either have a professional look at it, or keep an eye on it for a while. If it were a chip out of the inside part of the joint it would probably effect the sound or tuning, but a chip on the outside shouldn't do anything at all.

Just be glad you didn't do something stupid like I did yesterday:

Edited: How do you make hot links, other than putting them on the skillet?

Edited again: NM, I got it.

Such chips are easily filled these days, with excellent and lasting results with grenadilla dust and superglue. A quick job. In the mean time, don't worry about it.

Ah WJK! It's the first in a long line of chips, scratches, checks, stains, etc. that will make your instruments life unique and tell the tale of it's existance with you. Have it checked out, and I know you feel bad since it's the first marking on your new horn, but keep in mind there will be many to follow. And each one will have it's story to tell.
