Dear Clarinet fans!!

I tried posting this issue in the Klezmer board but now i want to see what you might know!!
Im looking for quartets to sexstets in the style of klezmer yet classical for clarinet and strings(in the sstyle of Pokofiev's ensemble for the overture on Hebrew Themes). Anyone knows of such pieces less famous but worth playing??
thanks!

You might try the Canadian Music Center for music of Srul Irving Glick. He wrote a series of Hebraic Suites. One is for clarinet, piano, and strings. There may be other works by him.

The Composer's Database at this (www.woodwind.org) site includes Hamishiyah le-klarinetah (clarinet and four strings), by the Israeli composer, Paul Ben-Haim. Look him up by name there for further information. He also wrote a clarinet quintet that might fit your bill. He arranged one movement of the quintet for clarinet and string orchestra, "Pastorale Variee." The Louisville Symphony recorded it on their label and there is a piano reduction. SheetMusicPlus lists both the Quintet and the Pastorale Variee as available.

Dieter Klocker has recorded a 2-CD set entitled Esquisses Hebraiques on the CPO label. It is a collection of clarinet quintets on Jewish themes. It may be out of print but Amazon.com shows three copies available. Frequently, the sheet music to Klocker's recordings is unavailable but you can try to track down the composers from the list at Amazon.

There are a couple of works by Osvaldo Golijov that have been recorded, "Yiddishbbuk," and "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind." I don't think the music is available yet.

Go to Amazon.com and search for Giora Feidman. My memory tells me that there is a work for clarinet (and/or bass clarinet) and string quartet on one of his recordings, possibly "Der Golem" but I'm not sure.

Finally, you could try e-mailing the Israel Music Institute. Their e-mail address is listed under "resources-music centers" on the homepage of this site.

That should keep you busy for awhile.

Best regards,
jnk
