OMG, Bob A, you're my hero! You just made me laugh so hard! The "Mets" are a US baseball team, for those of you who don't get the reference to the play on words.

Who's on first? (clarinet, that is.)

I've been known to be a bottom-feeder as well. BA, MC & DS, nice to have friendly company.

Hmmm...a friend of mine was invited to audition for the New York City Metropolitan Opera Orchestra clarinet opening (all spelled out kids so as to avoid "misunderstandings"). Just wondering if he got the job, or just made it to the final round again. (he's a lefty, but plays clarinet "right")

Is Jon Manasse up for it or has he been appointed principal full time?

Jon Manasse is a fantastic clarinetist, I hope he continues to be in the met orchestra for the good of the orchestra!

Apparently, Jon Manasse went to all the auditions a few years ago and couldn't get anything, even after he had put out those fabulous recordings. Then he got the job at Eastman, and suddenly everybody wanted him.

He would make a great principal at the Met, but I'm told he's happy at Eastman, so I think it's 50/50 what he decides to do. If they wanted him at the Met, I suppose they would have offered it to him without an audition, since he was already playing there, so unless the audition is a sham, or he's either mortally offended someone important or he's decided to stay at Eastman. This is all speculation, though.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

Thanx Ken, that jon manasse story has really lifted my spirits. It's nice to know that it only takes one opportunity to really set the stage for a wonderful career and that just because you're considered a nobody one day doesn't mean you'll be considered a nobody the next.

Stephen Williamson won the audition, which concluded Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Wow Thanks for the good news Mr. Hartman, I think Stephen Williamson is a wonderful clarinetist. I remember hearing him with the eos orchestra, and Man his tone is beautiful, clean, very fluid technique, and I think he will be a great addition to that orchestra!!!!!!

I attended the Met on Saturday night - incredible performance of Figaro.

The first clarinetist was a young woman named Jessica Philipps (I think)
John Manesse didn't play, but was listed as principal in the program.

gold ol' Ognibene was playing second (he's also principal bass clarinet)

so long rabbai and morales

By the way, the clarinets sounded great to me

Steve Hartman posted a little more detail on the Klarinet board. He said:

My understanding of the result of the audition is as follows: Stephen Williamson will become Principal Clarinet in a couple of weeks, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Joseph Rabbai. If Ricardo Morales decides not to return to the Met next season (by Jan. 1, 2004) Anthony McGill of the Cincinnati Symphony will be offered the other Principal Clarinet position, which he would then assume in September, 2004.

Is Riccardo planning to stay in Philly or leave? How does he like it there?

Anthony McGill is such a wonderful player. I had the fortune of hearing him perform the Debussy with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, it was quite stunning.

Founded at the Eastman School of Music, Meliora Winds is the first all-wind quintet to win the prestigious Concert Artists Guild Competition in 20 years. The ensemble also is a winner of the Saunderson Award at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition. Members are Kirsten Larson, flute; Keve Wilson oboe; Stephen Williamson, clarinet; Jill Williamson, horn; and Susan Leogering, bassoon.
