Dear Friends!
I am working on the berio sequenza and I heard that the piece was suppose to be with electronics.Does anyone have info o this? why was it left like it was? were the long notes there for that reason, and why did he never wrote the electronics part?
as for the multiphonics, why did he write for clarinet with a low eflat? who was he writing the piece for?
thanks for all info!!
michal.

While I cannot answer specifics on the piece, I have traveled and performed in Italy. Most Italian Bb clarinets have the low Eb. With Berio being Italian, I am sure he composed it for an Italian clarinetist and therefore added the low Eb.

i have heard Alessandro Carbonare perform this twice- neither time did he play a full Boehm clarinet (with low E flat). He told me he consulted Berio for advice on how to deal with the multiphonic (that requires a low E flat key).
he is a very friendly and helpful man, and i know he has worked with Berio on this work and has played it many times. Why not try to contact him via email and see if he can answer your questions (then post what you've discovered here for all to read).
Mr Carbonare is a true gentleman, i'm sure he won't mind you emailing him.

Tony Pay has written about the Berio Sequenza several times on the Klarinet list, including the low Eb and special effects. Go to http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/LogsIndex/index.html and search on Berio Sequenza.
If the material there isn't enough, post a question. As long as he's not contradicted, Tony is very responsive and helpful.
Best regards.

Michal -
It would be a lot better to ask on the Klarinet list, so everyone will have the advantage of the answer. Also, as I said, Tony Pay is a bit prickly if he feels he's being imposed on. If you insist, his email address is tony AT stsm DOT demon DOT co DOT uk (substitute @ and periods).
Best regards.

dear ken,
I didnt mean to withhold information, it's just that he himself offered in one of the old messgaes the version for the multiphonics that him and berio agreed upon and siad he will email it to anyone interested. I would gladly share this information with the clarinet list!!!
so, i will keep you all posted,ok?
many thanks,michal.
