Davie Cane

Hi,
I recently had a mouthpiece refaced by David Spiegelthal. The mouthpiece played so well (night and day difference) that I thought I should check it with a few reed strengths to see if I should make an adjustment. (My current stash of Gonzalez FOF reeds (the only ones we use) is running low and I will be reordering soon.)
I emailed Phil Shapiro, and asked him if he could send me 2 reeds each of Gonzalez FOF strength 3.75 and 3.5. Well, within a few days a box of reeds comes in the mail with 4 each of the strengths I requested. Phil must have gotten those reeds in the mail within 6 hours of my initial email for me to get them so fast.
It’s been a long time since I have experienced customer service this good. As a matter of fact the last time I experienced anything this good was about 11 years ago from Hewlet Packard.

Both of them used to teach at my school- and infact Bob is still the oboe professor.

I too have experienced this type of customer service when dealing with Davie Cane. Now that they offer clarinets as well, I now know of one dealer that we can all agree has excellent service. I talked to Phil about trying some of those Howarths and Rossis(when he gets some in) when I get my mom to take me there (being unable to drive is a real joy).

Has anyone heard anything about the Gonzalez reed case? I know Davie Cane now carries them, but I wanted to know if anyone had experience with them yet.

Hewlett-Packard never made reeds. but their first product (1939) was an electronic audio generator. No reed required.

So, Mark, how did the various reed strengths do? Enquiring mind wants to know.

Bradley...I use the Gonzalez reed wallet as my reed portable case. I have a few of the older Harrison wood cases which stay in the studio.

The Gonzalez reed wallet is made of leather and comes in a few different colors. When folded, it is held tightly closed by a single snap. It comfortably holds 5 reeds on a glass surface.

I like it because of its slim profile and light weight. It fits easily in a shirt pocket or the accessory pocket of your case...GBK

John,
Preliminary testing seems to point to 3.75, as there appears to be a falloff in tone quality with the 3.5s. This suprised me, I didn't expect a sudden change like that and rechecked my findings several times. I will continue with the testing as I need to be sure.
