Hey...
Just moved to Boston for college and I'm looking around for different places. Anyone here know of a shop where I can buy reeds and clarinet accessories? I don't have access to a phonebook yet to find shops, and my internet searches haven't been very helpful.
I have found a place in Porter (?) Square that has sheet music. Haven't been there yet, though... anyone know if it's worth it? It's in Cambridge, near Harvard.

For sheet music, the place you found and Music Expresso. It's across teh street from NEC. There's no sign and you have to go upstairs...so ask any NEC student. Someone carrying a violin or cello case.
Down teh street is Rayburn's. It's right next door to Symphony Hall. It's a very busy music store selling all instruments but they ahve a pretty decent selection of clarinet stuff. Emilio, the "Sax Doctor" works there.
Also, Albert Alphin in Needham, MA has a ton of clarinet stuff. He runs his own shop out of his house, so you have to make appointments before you visit him. He has the largest collection of clarinet stuff in the area, and he's also a pretty competent repairman. He's far away, though...so you would need someone to drive you. Call him first. I think he's a sponsor of this site. Otherwise, look him up in the phone book.
And i think that's about it in Boston.

One of my favorites is University Music in Lowell. Again you need to drive.
All the reeds and accessories that you want. Mouthpiece trials not a problem and A and Bb Buffets and Leblancs (maybe the others too).

Rayburn is so much more expensive than anywhere else. I have been told there that a $180 is a good deal on a Buffet Moenning Barrel and heard them sell a box of strength 4 v-12 for $21. If you want anything that you can order from any of the mail order people, do it, your wallet will thank you. Alphin always has a bunch of mouthpieces floating around and is much cheaper than Rayburn.

Price is why I recommend University Music in Lowell. A box of V-12's might be around 15.00 - 16.00 (could be more or less just guessing). Typically their prices are close to what you might pay from mail order without paying shipping and handling. If you are buying reeds in bulk you might want to order from the web as you can get better prices but the shop is owned by a clarinet player and she does stock some interesting reeds and accessories.
Also, has the advantage of being there in an emergency.
