 Vandoren Revisited
Author: LeWhite

I've been trying Gonzalez for about 6 months now. Previously, I played Zonda. Previously, I played Vandoren V12.

I stopped vandorens because they weren't consistent enough, and I spent too much time adjusting them and not enough time practising! So I put away the three boxes I had, and used Zonda for a while.

Zonda were great, but their life is so short.

Gonzales were OK, required so much break-in time. And they're incredibly hard reeds until you break them in! I have been getting headaches and earaches so much with them, because they require a little more effort to me.

Tonight, I got out those 3 boxes of Vandorens, which have been sitting there for about a year.

BRILLIANT!

They play beautifully, consistently, easily, and with nice tone. Also, they feel much more stable than Zonda or Gonzalez.

So, I guess for the time being, I'm going back to Vandoren.. They're not THAT bad really. it's just hard to find a good one.

I think I'm one of the first people to have something bad to say about Gonzalez... Even though I have so many good things to say about them.

What do you all think?

Wish I could comment! After hearing many positive comments about Gonzalez reeds on this board, thought I would try them out myself. Unfortunately though, there doesn't seem to be anywhere that sells them in the UK, and buying them overseas over the internet seems a little too much trouble just for a box of reeds!

i don't get it, i never had a problem with consistansy with any brand really. my personal favorites are grand concert, but vandoren and lavoz which i use too are also great. i use the reular vandorens, and of course 1-3 reed out of each box would be better than others, but pretty much 9 out of 10 are great.

I have always found good success with Vandorens. With some light adjusting and balancing, I can get most of them out of the box to work. I prefer the traditional cut. They seem to be more resiliant and last longer for me than the V12. I have tried some of the other reeds out there, (Zonda, Mozart, Gonzalez, Grand Concert) but always find a playing quality and sound in the Vandorens that brings me back. I see that lots of people seem to be loving the Gonzalez. While I hear some things in there that I find attractive, I have not really been able to get these working for me well enough to perform on them.

Gonzalez reeds can be purchased in the UK from Howarth of London.

Happy Tooting Everybody!
