Hello everyone,
I have just been listening to Mahler 6 and was looking through my collection at my Mahler recordings.
What recordings do people recommend for Mahler Symphonies?
I have the following:
Symphony No. 2 - LSO / Kaplan
Symphony No. 4 - Scottisch National Orch / Marshall
Symphony No. 5 - VPO / Bernstein
Symphony No. 6 - San Fransisco Symphony / Tilson Thomas
Symphony No. 7 - BPO / Abbado & CSO / Solti
Symphony No. 8 - CSO / Solti
Symphony No. 9 - CSO / Giulini
Symphony No. 10 - BPO / Rattle
You will notice No.s 1 & 3 are not in my collection, any recommendations would be good!

I've never listened to Mahler much, but Bernstein's recordings with the NY Phil, Vienna Phil and the Concertgebouw are regarded as the gold standard by many. I believe Amazon has two cycles available -- one older set with the NY Phil, and another newer one with all three orchestras.
This is just word of mouth as I don't own any of them myself.a

Symphonie No10-currently escapes my recollection
If I mention more than one, i prefer the first, I am also very curious to discover the Kaplan version of Mahler 2.

The only Mahler I like, personally, is the cycle recorded by the Concertgebouw with Haitink.

Maybe it's because they're the first performances of each that I've heard, but I still think they compare very highly due to the interpretations and the strength of sound on the recording.
No 1: Lorin Maazel (I think with Vienna Phil, but Maazel's reading is great anywhere)
No 3: Klaus Tennstedt (I think with London Symph or London Phil).
There may be music shops which allow you to listen to recordings for a few minutes to decide.

I absolutely agree with you Leonard about the best SET (the brass playing takes some getting used to for those of us raised on the american brass style) being Kubelik and Bavarian Radio.
I think most of Rattle's are fantastic because they do so much more of what's in the score than many other recordings.
The best Mahler 6 last movement hammer blow (not the whole recording, although it's good) is Benjamin Zander with the Philharmonia Orch.
I have yet to find a Mahler 3 recording that I think is terrific in every respect (I enjoy Rattle's, Bernstein's, Leinsdorf/Boston) but this is the most troublesome for me of finding a recording that I love start to finish (probably because it's so long!!!)

Have to second Leonard's selection of Rattle and CBSO esp. for 1 & 2. I admit the latter is biased from the memory of attending the repeat of the Symphony Hall opening concert. It was the 1st time I'd heard Mahler 2 and the ppp tremolo strings at the start raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

Incredible Das Leid with a stellar orchestral performance
In Mahler I tend to avoid Haitink(cold and detached)
I also avoid quite a few records which I know are flawed by either bad conducting or a combination of factors.

I'm glad you find Haitink cold and detached - he obviously got to the heart of Mahler's very troubled soul.

I have many recordings of each symphony. Probably three or four. My favorites of each are:
Sym 1- Chicago Symphony/Solti
Sym 2- NY PHil/Bernstein
Sym 3- Berlin Phil/Abbado
Sym 4- Cleveland/Szell
Sym 5- Berlin Phil/Rattle
Sym 6- Cleveland/Szell
Sym 7- Chicago Symphony/Abbado
Sym 8- Atlanta/Shaw, Vienna?/Solti
Sym 9- NY Phil/Bernstein
Sym 10- either Berlin Phil/Rattle or Philly/Levine
In my opinion, one of the greatest of all Mahler recordings has to the be Sixth Symphony by Cleveland and Szell. The third mvt. sets this recording apart from the rest. This symphony also has magnificent clarinet playing. It is on the Sony Classical label, and can be found at most CD stores. It is budget priced too!
