 Borbeck Mouthpieces
Author: Mary Beth

Hey everyone.
I currently play on a Larry Combs mouthpiece with a Rovner lite lig and V-12 Vandoren reeds- size 4. My teacher is now suggesting that I order a Borbeck mouthpiece- in both 11 and 13 facings and decide which one i like best. She, along with Dennis Shaller, the former principal clarinet of the DSO, swear by them. She says that the German mouthpieces give a bit of a darker sound. Any comments??

Thanks in advance,
Mary Beth

Sure, the german hard rubber mpc's are in demand. Darker sound, perhaps. But, they tell me its all in your setup incl. your reed and ligature and, most of all, YOU. I have a BORBECK 12 that I use with v/d V13 3.5's and a BG Revelation ligature. I selected from several Borbeck 11, 12, & 13's. I like mine, and my teacher helped to pick the one we agreed suited me best. Mr. Borbeck was recommended by my teacher as well. Robert Borbeck lives in Las Vegas, NV and was studied with Kaspar, of the famous mouthpieces. Mr. Borbeck is a pleasure to work with.

The information I have about the Borbeck mps is from my pro tutor. He has a Borbeck 13 mp that plays extremely well. My personal comparison of my Vandoren B45 and the Borbeck 13 is this. The B45 is a good mass produced mp and it looks and plays like it. The Borbeck 13 is very close in overall dimensions and playability with the Vandoren B45 product, but the apparent quality was much better. Even as an adult novice, I noticed the difference in tone quality and greater ease of playability with the Borbeck 13. It's that significant.

I'll cut to the chase. The Borbeck 13 is on my Christmas "wish list".

For the folks who had the luxury of checking out several Borbeck mp models, how did you do it? What was the store's policy on returning the mps that you didn't want? Would you recommend mail ordering a Borbeck mp or would you recommend buying it from a retailer? If so, who was your retailer? Finally, does Borbeck sell directly to customers?

Call the mail order places for return policies on mpc's. Most (all?) are very liberal. Make sure you have a fabric or plastic ligature, though. If you scratch it, you own it.

Lots 'o luck finding a retailer who carries them! I haven't found any other than large mail-order places carrying them.

He has a business address & tel. number, so I'd assume he does. From the Retail section:

Robert Borbeck sells ths German hard rubber directly for $175. It is distinguishable by 3 lines across.

IMD and WW&BW sell the French-style (two lines across) for less than a $100. Weiner used to carry the French-style may have a couple on hand. Muncy doesn't carry at all.

My teacher plays an 11 and I tried it first. Then I got sveral to try from Mr. Borbeck and we liked the 12 the best.

There is no way to know in advance which model will suit you best. Just gotta try 'em. Everybody's setup, physical attributes and embouchure is DIFFERENT. No way to predict. In fact, few custom mouthpieces are EXACTLY alike and that adds even more to the EQUATION. ex: It could be that your teacher has an older model (as my teacher did) and the new ones that are being made by Mr. Borbeck might not work for you at all. No way to know in advance, you just have to demo the mpcs.

Good luck.

Mary Beth:

The french-style, 2-line mpcs are sold by mail-order music suppliers and the german hard rubber, 3-line mpcs are sold by Robert Borbeck, himself. Mr. Pyne, like so many other famous mouthpiece purveyors, is world famous. I have never tried a Pyne. (good pun available, but I won't say it) <grin> GOOD LUCK!
