The Carlos Kleiber Brahms 4th is astounding---What other versions of Brahms fourth would BB readers recommend? What other Kleiber recordings are recommended? Thanks!

I have three versions of Brahms' 4th on CD and have heard another one on the radio, and my favorite is Bernard Haitink and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

I grew up on the Toscanini/NBC Brahms 4th, so it's hard to separate its merits from early memory, but I love it. As an anodyne, I have a Furtwangler/Berlin set, which is equally great.

I didn't care for the Szell/Cleveland set when it came out on LP, but the CD release is marvelous. Apparently the CO had too much low and mid-bass power to avoid distortion on LPs, so the engineers had to cut it back. At any rate, I listen in awe to this set. (The same for their Schumann symphonies.)

Best regards.

My favourite recording (surprise, surprise!) is Harnoncourt with the Berlin Philharmonic. I also very much like Haitink's recording with the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Any of Kleiber's DVD/VHS with the MET Opera Orchestra in the late 80s. There is a Schubert 8/3 cd that is ok; Mozart 40 is great, as is a Live recording of Beethoven 4 with Bavarian Radio Symphony; Strauss Waltzes with Vienna (new years concert in late 80s, early 90s- the principal oboist looks exactly like Harry Potter- it's remarkably scary); his Beethoven 5 and 7 are terrific. All except Beethoven 4 (orfeo, i believe) are available on DG.
Too bad he's not conducting anymore.

As I recall the recording which got everyone talking about Carlos Kleiber was his Beethoven 5th with the Vienna Phil. The US LP release was on the DGG label; it has probably been reissued on CD.

BTW, the favorite Beethoven 5th recording for many people was (is?) by Kleiber's father (Erich Kleiber) with the C/G/B Orch of Amsterdam c. 1950.

The other Brahms 4 I think is stupendous is the Klemperer with the Philharmonia...
