I saw a reconditioned Penzel Mueller Artist clarinet in a music shop today. It had three barrels (62, 64, and 68mm). I assumed from that that it was a professional model clarinet, so I played it for about 10 minutes. I was just wondering if anyone else still plays one of those and what your thoughts are.

Yes, I have an Artist which I have put in playing condition [not a total overhaul], and it plays reasonably well, but not up to modern standards. Under a post farther down the BB, Info on Old Cl, we somewhat discussed the flower-pot question which may be of interest to you. Don

I, too, have a couple Penzel-Muellers, A and Bb from the early part of the century. Nicely made and work well as back up instruments. PM went was in business from about 1899 to 1965.

I just sold a Penzel-Mueller "Artist" clarinet which I restored a couple of months ago. I would say it played very well, quite up to modern standards. I considered keeping it for myself as my "daily player", but decided I needed the money more than another good clarinet. I don't know the date of manufacture of mine, but I'd guess 1940's or thereabouts.
