... don't panic! if you're getting a pure T-plate oboe, only 2 basic notes to change, but if you're getting a dual system T-plate, no sweat at all, conservatory works

left thumb holds oboe on the T-plate, not off to the side of the 8ve key, the T-plate is held closed most of the time

with pure T-plate, most notes pretty similar to conservatory really, the 2 main different basic notes are:
Top C is played with B and open T-plate (B is played with T-plate closed)
B-flat is played with A and open T-plate (A is played with T-plate closed)

... so you just have to stop yourself using the F# key for C and B-flat
and get used to the weird 'losing a grip' feeling when playing upper C (low C or Eb helps with resonance)

Ist 8ve is rolled slightly over from the T-plate to hold both down, or roll further over onto 8ve to lift T-plate as needed, hopefully the octaves will be semi-automatic, but if the oboe's antiquated T-plate with manual octaves, have to be very diligent rolling thumb on & off 1st 8ve at transitions with 2nd and half-hole

Make sure oboe's weight is balanced fully on the right thumb-rest when playing T-plate system, right thumb has all the work here, left thumb must be just resting on, not gripping T-plate tightly, or will get reed wriggles when lift thumb on / off

fit left thumb-rest with wide cusion if necessary for more comfort and better weight distribution

BUT if you're getting a dual system with T-plate, don't sweat it, conservatory works OK -- just keep T-plate closed all the time and bet you'll just love the smooth feel of subtle rollover onto 1st 8ve

What key signatures will you playing in and how high are you going?
