The actual "final product "oboe sound that any given staple produces is usually not very important, because the oboist is going to scrape the reed in order to let them play comfortably to achieve their desired sound concept. What *is* different is how a staple reacts to the cane (on one end) and the oboe (the other end) Some people choose to use a more open-feeling staple because the reeds they were making previously felt too closed and sharp all the time. Conversely, some people might choose to have a more closed-feeling staple, because the reeds they had before were too flat and wide-feeling.
Everyone has their different opinions on which staples do what...and honestly I think it's best to remember that it's just that...an opinion. You have to go search, and find which staples seem to work most consistently for you, and stick to them.
