I understand the problem of purchasing reed supplies as a college student! If you are looking to save money, you can absolutely buy the items separately and get other tools at a later date. The most expensive tool you will purchase to adjust your reeds will be the knife. If you are a beginner learning to scrape them yourself, I say don't buy an expensive knife; buy a cheap knife. My first knife was a Vitry double hollow ground but a Rigotti knife should be good as well. The reason I suggest getting the cheapest knife possible is you will not only be learning to scrape the reeds but also sharpening your knife. I completely ruined my first knife because I was applying uneven pressure as I sharpened it and really messed up the blade. But it was my first knife and it is all part of the learning curve.

Even though the knife is the most expensive part, if you treat it well and take care of the blade, it will last you many years! You won't replace your knife every month or even every year so you get a lot of use for your investment.

Are you wanting to learn to make reeds on your own or is it part of your college curriculum?
