Use a loop of 8 lb. test monofilament fishing leader fed through the tip of a wet reed, then pinch the reed between thumb & forefinger & pull out the leader. All the gunk comes out & there is no damage to the reed. Tom Stacy recommends this reed cleaning method. You can buy a spool of this stuff for $2 or $3 which will last several lifetimes. The problem with pipe cleaner or feather is that lint or feather hunks could be left behind in the reed. Not a happy prospect. After each practice session, flush out the reed under running tap water (round end up) & 99.375% of problems will be eliminated. Then use the leader to eliminate the remainder of unwanted goop. I should also mention that brushing teeth before placing reed in mouth helps enormously.
Best,
john
