Long tones rock.

When I'm just playing pieces without doing the "tech stuff" every day, I start to lose consistency, just as you're describing; I end up with some notes that are glorious and "phat", and some notes that are just "erm, let's not dwell here, let's get off this note ASAP".

Only long tones, every day, keeps me from that.
