myoboe,

If your blades are really different thicknesses, this could really hinder the reed-making process. I would consider the source of your cane if you have thickness inconsistancy, as this could most certainly contribute to any funkiness you are experiencing with the "product."
I make my own reeds and I gouge and shape my own cane and use a micrometer to ensure the thickness in the center of the piece of cane is consistant throughout, ideally between 58 and 60 micrometers and not a micrometer thicker or less thick. I would junk my own cane for such inconsistancies. Hope this helps.  :)
