Luckily at the moment I am quite motivated to practice in general. Just today though, I don't really feel like practicing. Sure I'll have to play later in the day, but I would still like to pursue some musical activity this morning that is going to make me a better musician.
What things do you suggest?

Score study - orchestral or chamber music...sometimes that motivates you to play too!

hahaha, I'm sorry, when I get done overhauling a clarinet, I don't think I'd feel like practicing it, but everybody's different.
When you don't feel like practicing, it's best not to practice, in my opinion. As clarinet players we must find other things to do. Indeed, we must find a way to get a life, from time to time - as difficult as it may seem.

When I overh-,err,fix up a clarinet I have to break it in at least one hour in order to check the pads, key action and all that.
Depending on the quality of my work, this saves me from doing the tennis ball exercise. (Besides, a dynabee is more fun)

If you're reading this, then it's clear to see what you're doing when you don't feel like practicing!

Sometimes, "I don't feel like practicing" is just a momentary stage of distracted grumpiness with me, and the best way for me to get over it is by -- practicing. Usually it only takes disciplining myself to get out an instrument and warm up with some scales before music chases away whatever started that mood.

Day 1 - Take a break. The world won't come to an end.
Day 2 - Work on reeds.
Day 3 - Read a book about the clarinet/clarinet playing (Brymer, Pino, Rehfeldt, etc.)
Day 4 - Get out your clarinet and noodle on it for awhile or turn on the radio to a pop/rock/jazz station and play along with whatever happens to be on.
Day 5 - Put your clarinets up for sale on eBay. You clearly lack the focus to amount to anything as a musician. Begin a degree in accounting. At least you'll make good money.
Best regards,
jnk

When I don't feel like practicing.......I don't--which, at my age, is becoming much more the norm. Mostly, I am in the "maintainance only" stage of life and just practice the repretoire necessary. Fortunately, I have enough work to keep me going. If it wasn't for performing, I don't think I would practice at all.

When you don't feel like practicing?---
This is usually not a problem for me. My problem is, 'When you don't feel like going to work...'

"carve out tiny orchestras in chocolate" hahaha.
When I dont feel like practising, I listen to lots of music not just clarinet repertoire. Score read some of the really great core pieces that every clarinet player should to know with recordings. Listen to the mozart concerto/quintet, brahms sonatas/quintet, poulenc sonata, weber concertos/quintet, crusell concertos, copland concerto etc. After that you will feel like playing them to the standard of the recordings and hence start practising. Yes eating chocolate helps but dont go playing clarinet straight after eating it :S brush your teeth or something haha.
good luck, 2E

When inspiration lacks, why not just run some scales/arpeggios, some Baermann, or anything else that'll make you feel like you've done a LITTLE something.
Listening, reading, repairing ... these are all great suggestions!
Do you write? Maybe transcribing something. I always have a couple of projects open.
Or a change of pace? I practice rhythm guitar late at night when I can't make horn-level noise. It's a ton of fun experimenting with jazz chords, restores a feeling of hobby to the music, and also helps as a teaching tool. Just as absorbing as a video game, but with far better rewards--even for a mediocre-at-best player like myself.

Clean your instrument.
It's still more entertaining than vacuuming.

thats what im gonna do right now. the practicetime is over and im going to my room. going to line up some chocolate, some grapejuice and my cleaningtools for the clarinet. a bottlecleaner, some bore oil, other oils for the mechanics, and screwdrivers. and the fun begins.
take apart the whole clarinet. clean it inside out with the bottlecleaner and boreoil and then put back the keys and oil and clean and make them shiny.
my swab have turned from yellow to brown because the first owner smoked pipe and was playing on the same time. :P and it's dried saliva in all the toneholes that makes it easier to start leaking....
otherwise i play some other instrument. ukulele or piano. or listens to music...

oh god you can get some dodgy youtube clarinet videos, when your bored or dont feel like practising try making your own youtube video! just record yourself playing the opening of the mozart or a couple of scales or something to get an idea of how you will sound, it can get addictive!
chocolate is good for when the music dementors suck the happiness out of you ...

Better than making your own video - watch some of the depressing bad ones, and WHAM, you no longer feel like the worst player in the world!

I love Martin Frost's sound - so perfect.
