Apologies if this is a dumb-newbie question that's already been asked
in some form I haven't been able to retrieve:
I am a middle-aged professional with a lifelong interest in classical
music but little success, so far, in mastering an instrument. It has
occurred to me that my past efforts have had no particular goal, no
reason for wanting to play well. Given that the sound of the oboe has
always fascinated me, that I remember some recorder technique from
many years ago, and that a few years of piano lessons have shown me
how much practice and dedication are needed to make real progress,
let's say I commit to a teacher and to regular practice on the oboe.
How many years can I expect to have to work before I can reach my
goal, namely to be able to play in something like a community
orchestra? I don't expect ever to reach the level of chamber, let
alone solo, playing, but the prospect of participating in making that
orchestral sound is very appealing.
Five years? Ten years?
Thank you all,
-- Nicholas Hartmann
