 A new ensemble

Hello all,

I have discussed this idea with my partner in the past and a colleague has just emailed us with the same idea. Now that I am aware of a need for this particular market, I am after some advice.

Here in Perth, we have several community bands (around 10) and orchestras (3). As Perth is such a small place (and being Aussies, very laid back), we tend to share a lot of players between these ensembles, and they do largely attract amateurs. There is a core of good players, but there are a lot more who don't participate in any of them as they don't want to have their time wasted in rehearsals by those who are there to socialise and who need a lot of support to play their instrument (i.e. adult learners, etc). These good players are also often time poor.

The idea is that we form a seasonal wind ensemble which will focus on performing high-end repertoire. As it will be an invitation ensemble, we can be sure to pick players who can get down to business and get the repertoire going in about 4-6 rehearsals (eliminating the 'once a week, every week' rehearsals that put a lot off from committing), culminating in a concert. We would look to our local universities for assistance (in the form of players, funding, venues and sheet music).

Has anyone set something like this up before? Or been involved at the grass roots of developing an ensemble? Advice for things we may need to consider is always welcomed!

Rachel
