 A Thumb Rest...
Author: JuneRaven

To make a long story short.... I have 'misplaced' my thumb rest on my oboe.... It is a shame to have curious kids that like going through your things. I have no idea how they did it but they lost my thumbrest. I do have to say, it was a little wiggly but still. I have searched on ebay, amazon, and google-ed for about a week now and I can't find somewhere that sells replacements. I have an off-brand oboe that is no longer open and selling, so going back to the dealer is not an option. Does anybody know of a place where I could get one? I'm not sure if all oboes have the same measurements for it or not.... If so, I could possibly reach out to another dealer but I'm hoping someone would know of another option. Thanks for any help!

What make is your oboe?

A clarinet thumbrest (the sheet metal kind) will fit but will probably need the base to be squeezed to make the radius of the curve smaller. Windcraft (in the UK) stock clarinet thumbrests - they have a Selmer USA oboe one which should go straight onto any oboe provided the screw holes line up, though it may need the holes filled and redrilled if they're not in the same place https://www.windcraft.co.uk/ catalogue number WSB7079

I would take it to a local repair shop. The technician should be able to fit it with a thumb rest.

They may have a drawer of old thumbrests taken from all manner of instruments, so well worth checking with them first.

If you have no luck, contact Howarth in Worthing to see if they could sell you one - their email is worthing@howarth.uk.com

I would suggest an adjustable thumb-rest as a replacement.
The two makes I use:

Selmer silver #C4915S available from Brook Mays Music c. $40.00
A truly well engineered thumb-rest. I use this on oboe,
oboe d'amore, English horn, and bass oboe.

Jupiter adjustable clarinet thumb-rest about $25
A large music store with a repair department should have this in stock
The Jupiter may not fit in some "French style" cases though

With best wishes,
Peter

Sorry, Haven't gotten a chance to get on! Thanks so much for all the great ideas! My oboe is an "Olds", but I believe that it is manufactured by Selmer.
My tech that I usually go too doesn't have any thumbrests on hand, but did offer to fit on a clarinet one- but he would have to redrill the holes. I'm just alittle scared about doing that.... But I will definetly try your suggestions! Thanks guys!

Drilling screw holes into the joint isn't a problem provided they have a drill with a depth stop so no more than a depth of 5mm is drilled into the joint (although you can drill deeper, 5mm is deep enough for wood screws). They may or may not need to fill in the redundant holes, but it's better if they do.

Now it all comes down to intended use; If you play, and this is going to be your oboe for the next decade or so :) I suggest you take the opportunity to install an adjustable rest. The difference in price between the cheapest thumb-rest and an adjustable seems to be about 30 bucks - well worth the money.
On the other hand, if you are putting a thumb-rest on it so that you can sell it, go for the 9 buck thumb rest.

J.
