Which is the default: tonguing, or slurring?

I am now getting into Concert Band playalong music where the slurs are not always marked for you. So, am I supposed to be tonguing every note, or am I supposed to slur every note, or what? When I'm playing a tune like "Yankee Doodle Dandy" in 2/4 time, it sounds choppy and spitty somehow if I tongue every single note. I think it sounds nicer if I slur as much as possible. Is that wrong?
