 Milhaud Trio
Author: Ed Lowry

I'm working on Milhaud's Suite, Op. 157b for Clarinet, Violin and Piano. The third movement, "Jeu," is for clarinet and violin only, and I have a question about the 12th measure.

My edition (Salabert) has a sixteenth note arpeggio of four notes beginning at A3 (T xxx xxo). The notes ascend A, C#, F natural and throat A, followed by a quarter note C#. Our coach, who has performed this many times, but reading a large folio edition which she no longer has, recalls the F natural as an E natural.

Is there anyone on the list who can shed light on this?

Thanks.
Ed Lowry, Sacramento

My large folio edition says it is an F natural in measure 12 and 68 on the recap.

Incidentally, you might want to play the 1st and 3rd mvts on A clarinet.
I find, particularly with students, that these mvts have much more flair and vitality when played in F major on A clarinet than in E major on Bb clarinet.
