on barrel "1" my clarion A squeaks easily (when playing quick staccato) on barrel "2" it does not squeak. I was unaware that this was something that barrels could cause. both are "pro" barrels. is it just me or have others had similar problems caused by barrels. thanks for any replies.

Are the internal dimensions of the barrels the same? Is there a "step" at either end of barrel 1? Is there any possibility of a leak, however small. at the tenon joints of barrel 1?

the dimensions are likely not the same, they are two different brand of barrels. there is no step that i am aware of, and no leaks that i have been able to find.

I like that suggestion, especially when AAAClarinet adds,
>>the dimensions are likely not the same, they are two different brand of barrels.>>
The sound from a clarinet comes from the column of air vibrating inside the instrument. If the barrel is a different dimension than the original, it could be interfering with the frequency of the vibration.

I found it easy to discover whether there is a "step" between the barrel and the mouthpiece or the barrel and the top joint by gently probing the connection point with a wooden chopstick. If you stick the chop stick into the barrel from the bottom side you can detect if there is a step down or a step up as you transition to the mouthpiece. The same is true if you probe the barrel - top joint connection ( with the mp disconnected of course). If one is gentle one can feel if the tip of the chop stick has to move up or down or if it transitions smoothly indicating a near bore dimension. My calipers do not have jaws long enough to reach the inner bore. That is why pros use a special tool for this that I don't have. I wouldn't know where to buy a specialized tool like this, nor know how to use it. Note: David Pino says his favorite barrel is not a perfect match to mp or top joint bore, but it still plays both his A and Bb clarinet best of all the options he tried, so this is not an exact science.

Clarion A is not a particularly stable note. This is why it is prone to "grunting". This is caused by the dynamics of the air column, and there are people on this BBoard who can give you a much better explanation than I can. This is probably why it is the note that is affected by differences in the barrel dimensions. On several of my instruments I have been able to overcome problems with clarion A by changing to a different mouthpiece. I suspect the most likely cause of your problem is a mismatch between your mouthpiece and barrel 1. It might be worth trying it with a different mouthpiece just to prove the point.

If one barrel is looser than the other (on upper joint or mouthpiece), It may be leaking at a tenon/socket connection . The squeaky barrel may have a leak itself.

Step-offs between bore diameters between the mpc./barrel/joint are often by design. Gaps are not. BUT the most common barrel-related cause of squeaking is a loose tenon fit.

Thank you all for your help. I tightened the fit with some tape and the problem is solved. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love this board.
