JK -- you didn't read all of Ken's notes. The exception in this is trilling, when it would be entirely appropriate to use the trill keys. As for a Marcellus student challenge, I would be more than happy to organize one in the New York metro area for anyone who would like to participate. There's no substitute for playing for one another to prove or debunk a point.

By the same theory put forward above, playing c to eflat and b to c# above the break are also impossible, because you are trying to open and close holes at the same time. The same would go for slurring across the second break when you have to raise the 1st finger of the left hand and lower fingers from the right hand. However, people do play those legato somehow. That's what artistry is.

Playing the clarinet in tune is 'impossible' too, yet people do it.

Fundamentals are there so that you can take a musical concept and create it with your playing. If you imagine a good legato connection between f and f# or vice versa and you have done your homework, that legato will be fine fingered with the flip fingering. It will not be as easy to achieve and will come with a higher risk of trouble than the side keys, but it is certainly possible. It is being done every day.

The point is that there will often be times when the side key option for f# is not available. If you are properly trained you don't have to worry about those times. The reason to 'always' use the first finger f# is so that you will be able to do it when you need to. You can ALWAYS opt for the easier fingering because it doesn't require practice to do well.
