I'm familiar with all of the stuff you mention, Chris. Most of the Bulgarian clarinet stuff is done with a band of some sort. And it's unfortunate that Ivo's recordings are currently out of print. There is a "Best of" available at: http://www.bgbooks.net.
Try searching out Ferus Mustafov, a Macedonian gypsy clarinet/sax player. I'm not sure how available his one US recording is at this point, but it's excellent. There's another guy, Yasko Argirov, with one cd available domestically. Also look for anything on the label, Gega New. It's the current version of the old Balkanton (Bulgarian state label), and there are at least a couple good clarinet things on it. Unfortunately, my cd's are in vast disarray (I've got over 1000) and so I can't find their names right now. Of course this means my memory is also in disarray, since I can't REMEMBER their names either!
I'm not sure about your question on adapting Balkan music for clarinet. Much of it works splendidly! Of course, when you're alone, you don't get the same energy as when you've got a band (brass or other) to back you up.
Also check out: http://www.eefc.org for their fabulous listserv and annual Balkan Music and Dance camps. The next one is in Mt. Washington, MA from 17-24 Aug. I can't go this year, but have been for the last 3 and it is WONDERFUL!
All the best,
Katrina
