How long does a reed typically last? How often do i need to replace it with a new one?I use a two and a half size at this time. And does a thicker reed mean better sound?

If you're playing professionally, you'll probably need to replace your reed about once a week. If you are just learning, you should get a good few weeks out of each reed.
Harder reeds make a louder sound, and are also able to play the very high notes better, but they don't necessarily make a better sound for the normal notes. They are much harder to play, so you'll to practice at 2.5 for a few months before you move up to a 3.

It's all relative to the muscular mask of one's face. Some professionals play on fairly thin reeds, and they sound great, and project well, and some play on two-by-fours, and get the same results.
-->What's important is that you play on a comfortable reed. Don't worry if your bandmates are playing on harder reeds, it doesn't really prove anything. You must find a reed that doesn't limit you (because it's too thin) or make you work too hard (because it's too thick). If you don't, you will get tired very quick, and can potentially injure yourself. --->As far as replacing reeds, it's all dependant on the cane. Some cane is great and will last maybe even a month, and sometimes cane is garbage, and will last all of two days...it's all really variant. It's a good idea to have at least 5 reeds available to be able to use, if the others aren't working so well. Aside from that reeds are pretty much voodoo. Good luck.

You should have several reeds that you rotate. They will play better and last longer. I personally keep 10 reeds (one box) in the rotation. Every practice session, I use a different reed.

I am a clarinet player..
hmmm, i use 5... and i am crazy, i think...
when i used 5, it sounds much better on high notes... 4 sounds better than 3, and so on...
but lower notes, i find 4 to sound better there...
i can't really tell why, but probably it is related to the vibration of the reed.
using 5, or 4 hurts at the time, but soon, everyone gets used to it, and can play as long as they could with 3.
now i sound worse using 4, because my muscle at my mouth got little too strong...
it's just like work-out plan for mouth, i think...

ok first I gotta say Ive neva heard of a 4 or 5 reed, ne clues where I could get 1 to try for nothing else but a laugh?? And reed strength is more based on the type of mouthpiece you use rather than the noise it produces, I use two mouthpieces, on my vandoren mouthpiece I use a vandoren 3 reed, whereas on my fibreglass mouthpiece I only use a 2 and still get VERY good quality sound, its all to do with the flow of air through the window on the mouthpiece how a reed sounds

the reed strength has nothing to do with your mouthpiece, it's how thick the reed is. and if you can get vandorens, then it's possible to get 4's or 5's. vandoren makes the regular and V12 reeds up to 5, and german black masters up to 5++ and german white masters up to 5+. althought the size of the reed of german to regular is different.

it has to do with the window of the mouthpiece and how the sound quality is produced for instance a more open window would require a more flexible reed!!!!!

The basic "science" says: Open or wide mouthpiece opening = softer reed, close of narrower mouthpiece opening = harder reed. The same applies here as I mentioned with the mouthpieces above, don’t take this "science" for granted, and experiment.

wouldn't it be funny if they made a reed from grenadilla. haha, it'd be incredibly hard to play
