Both of these instruments are very hard to learn or so i've heard. If you like a deep tone go with the basson if you like high tones go with the oboe. The one thing i don't like about these instruments is that the reeds are more fragile than other reeded instruments.Bassons kind of sound like tenor saxes to me. I bet at least one person will say that you need to go with another instrument and i hate when people do that,if you ask about info on one instrument they talk about another instrument. And i think bassons have more keys than the oboe.I just like oboes better.

if you played flute, oboe would be your better bet of those two instruments. if you want something completely different, play bassoon. double reed instruments are harder to play, embouchure and breath technique. i know from most bands i've seen, they need more low instruments. if you choose bassoon, you need to learn the bass clef. hope this helps.

Go by which one sounds better to you. listen to a few records of each instrument. Another way to decide is to try playing each instrument out and deciding then. They all have pros and cons, but I'm not going to list them because the decision is compleatly up to you.

why would you want to trade instruments when you're barely going into high school? if you're still in junior high shouldn't you develop the flute more and THEN Decide if you want to trade? it sounds like you're not giving it a fair chance when the flute is one of the loveliest instruments to listen to. ultimately its up to you, i just think its a bit strange.

Being an oboe player, I think it'll be cool to have more poeple join the ranks of the greatest instrument in the band. Heck, we are the band. j/k.
Hey, its up to you.

There is a very very very good sophmore flute player in band at my high school and she switched over to oboe last year. She is in wind ensamble on both (which is our highest band). You should also learn piccolo if you haven't, because if you just stick with flute and piccolo and excel at both then in high school your band director will be happy.

if you plan to take flute further than school level then my advice is to not play a reed instrament as it ruins your embouchure but if not the basson is so cool and there are kess players

wow! oboe rox my sox! a tip is, since most band directors usually dun kno how to play this, u have to mostly teach urslef. try the d and e flat 1st because these teach u a great embouchure. the b flat and c are usually out of tune so don't focus too much on those.

an experienced 1st chair 1st band oboe player,
arnie
