Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Hodges, Paul Desmond, Charlie Parker, Benny Carter, Jimmy Dorsey were all great jazz alto sax players. It's going to be hard to find a good "famous" player outside jazz.

Famous non-jazz Alto Saxophonists (or just "Saxophonists"):
Sigurd Rascher
Marcel Mule
They were well known in classical music circles, just like the Jazz Artists were/are in their genre. They both made much contribution to the saxophone in classical music as far as general excellence in performance, raising the repitior, and establishing standards.

Hey.
Look in this stage of musical development it's hard to say a 'good sax player'. You've just got so many to choose from and so many different genres. Having said that i'm a professional muso in Melbourne, Australia and have been playing for quite a few years. My advice to you would be to check out as many horn players as you can get your hands on. Thus inclusive of alto, tenor, sop and even bari players. Everyone has got something to offer. HAppy playing.
