Yes it can be very hard at first, but just think of it as blowing into a large pop bottle! And soon enough w/ practice it will come.....and once you get it, for a while your tone quality on your instruments(including flute, sax, and clarinet) won't be as clear as you would probably like, but that will eventually improve over time and practice! Good luck, that's kinda what I did too...i play the clarinet and i picked up the flute too!

Ok, this is what my flute teacher told us in the sixth grade begining band. When blowing across the hole say pooh, but very lightly not a rough poo, and mix poo with hoo. After a while of practicing it will become distinct. Also, something that will help very good. Is while your are practicing your embouchure, practice infront of the mirror! The perfect flute emboucure will have a V-strip of air running across the front of the flute where you were blowing. That's why it is VERY important to watch yourself in front of the mirror! I hope you can understand this and that you do well!

..when you blow over the mouthplate of the flute a portion of the breath is going into the instrument while a portion blows over the opening. You'll know it when you can feel the vibration of the tone in the fingerkeys and that distictive flute sound without the breathiness. If there is a breathy quality to the tone then one of the two blowing elements mentioned above are missing from the tone production.
