Is it true that oboes are really really hard to learn?Do they have different bells to make it sound different?I hear that oboes have a lot of trills in songs,i don't know how to trill can someone explain it to me in an easy way to understand?!Oh and can they be used in marching bands?

a trill is when you go between one note and another a whole tone above it. and a tremolo is when you go from one note to another more then a whole tone apart. and to execute a trill you just go back and forth between the notes as fast as you can, sort of like a bee's wings buzzing. A oboe most likely won't be good in marching band, music isn't really writtn for it, and if you do not do a proper roll-step, you can break a reed right there. you'd be safer to go with a clarinet or sax. hope this helps.

Yes, the oboe is a fairly difficult instrument to start learning. It takes a fair amount of dedication and love for the instrument to really excel at it.
I posted a comment on here some time ago about why oboes shouldn't march. I cut and pasted it here:
1. The instrument is too delicate.
2. It would be impossible to maintain the appropriate embouchure and march.
3. The reeds are too fragile and expensive to replace.
4. They would never be heard.
5. If they were heard, you'd wish they weren't.
6. It's too hard to learn to play the oboe correctly to adulterate your technique with bad habits acquired from trying to play that loudly.
7. There are usually no oboe parts to marching band show tunes.
8. Oboes cannot play that sharp.
9. Oboists as a general rule are fussy, perfectionist primadonnas who would rather cut out their own teeth than pollute their instruments with tunes like "Gimme Some Lovin'", "Louie, Louie" or any type of fight song.
If you want to read the rest of the thread which followed this list, then just go to where it says, "Search the Forum" up top and search for "Why oboes do not march".

I play oboe and once you get the fingerings down, it's actually pretty easy, it's the embochure thatz kinda hard, but don't worry, you get the hang of it. And no, oboes only have 1 bell. Also, there are alot of trills, but there are special trill keys that make it really easy! you should play! it really fun!

I've played the oboe for sometime, and also flute in marchign band. The only senerio were the oboe is for marching band is when the person is in the front not marching simply playing a solo. I've seen a few schools try that out and it does work out quite nicely. But the oboe is a concert instrument. Once you learn the basics and practice it comes easily. It is the hardest woodwind instrument to play. Simply because its hard to get the good sound out. Anyone can pick up an instrument and learn notes. But to learn music, that is something that is given and or learned in time.
