Although I have an opinion on my own, I would like to see flute players discuss pros and cons at the following topics:
(1) Using a flute which does/doesn't have a (low pitch) B key.
(2) Using a flute with open/closed holes.

I have found that the opened holes or French style flutes are much harder to finger however make a better sound.
As for the Bb it allows you to go much lower, so that is a plus.

Hi,
Umm okay~ The open hole flute sounds alot richer and has better tone quality from what I've heard. I don't think the low Bb key is used alot according to all of my friends and tutors, but if you plan to play alot of music that requires it see what you think! by the way this might be a dumb question but what country are you from?

French holed flutes get a much better tone quality, unfortunately, they are also much harder to play. Most of my students keep their plugs in at least some of their keys. As to the low b, it's not in a lot of music because the majority of flutes don't have the capability to play the note. I like it though. It gives an added dimention to what the flute can do, esp. if you're composing for a flute. Amazing the difference a note can make in the music one can play.

I play flute...When I switched flutes(to french) my teacher didn't let me put in plugs. I was just fine without them, but then I had played french flutes a couple of times before. I like the sound of the french flute better, seems to be richer. I always have problem with the really low notes, but when you can hit them they sound cool.

The low B gizmo key helps altissimo notes come out richer.

I started out on a open holed flute with a low b key and i find that the open holed flute has a much better tone and that it is useful when you are playing music that calls for low b to be able to play it.
