Our band doesn't own an English horn, yet our director keeps giving us music with an important English horn part. I have been transposing the music, but am not getting the desired sound. Our director refuses to look into buying an English horn so any suggestions as to where I might find one to borrow would be appreciated.

Haha, tell the director to transpose his own music, you're on strike until he buys one.

well, are there any local schools that own one and will lend it to you if they're not using it? Our school doesn't own an English horn either, so we borrowed from a school that wasn't using it. My director doesnt want to purchase one either because after me, there are no good oboists to play it, so it'd be a waste of money. Try seeing if he can ask around for one. If not, it's his fault there isnt an English horn solo played by an English horn

yeah, i'd check around with the local schools and oboe teachers in your area. and if that doesn't work, just go for a more nasaly-muted sound from your horn.

our band has been having this very same problem. fortunatly a parent donated her english horn to me and i'm now playing it. you should try looking into older bands in your area and see if there were any english horns and look into barrowing it from them.
