Hello!
When I play my flute I play notes and I keep running out of breath. ( I know this sounds stupid but I just do.) I would like to know how to not run out of breath that fast.

Practice controlled breathing? what is that one might ask...
Well do this:
1.blow out of your mouth as if trying to fog up a window (haaa). What you should feel is a quick expulsion of the majority of your air.
2. Now, try focussing that air into a single narrow stream, and blow it into your hand. You should feel it "flow" off of your hand. You will notice that this one will last longer.
The second one involves controlled breathing, because it focusses (controls) the air leaving your body. Also instead of just "emptying your lungs" trying pushing the air out right from the pit of your stomach, as if emptying a tube of toothpaste. Squeeze those abs! This will put the most pressure on the air coming out, and, the higher pressure of air coming out, the better (and longer!) the tone.

Here's a great technique I use with my students, especially on flute:
Hold a piece of paper in your hand and extend your arm fully in front of you. Pierce your lips like you would to blow into your flute and take a deep breath from your diaphram. Blow evenly towards the center of the paper. It should blow away from you, but not waver from side to side.
If you aren't sure you are breathing from your diaphram, put your other hand on your stomach. It should go out with each breath, not your chest.
The more you do this, the more controlled and extended your breathing will become. Good luck!

Is anyone familiar with Melody Flutes, Are they still in
business ? If so does anyone know how to get it touch with
them. I've tried Laural, Maryland as stated on my Flute
but got nowhere....Help if you can.
Thank You....Nick
