dependind on who you talk to you'll get different answers. i can use ~Heather~ as an example, she suggests Yamaha, whereas other people will suggest Selmer. I've noticed that there are two different kind of people this way. Yamaha and Selmer will be your best bet, where if your getting it just to play on Jupiter is an okay brand, but you will outgrow its abilities with a few months of playing it, but they are cheaper. when you go to a music shop, try out the horn before you play. if your getting it online, you'll have no idea of it's playing ability. hope this helps.

From what my music colleagues say, Yamaha is definitely the sturdiest and highest quality of saxophone. For advancing models Selmer or Keilwerth are your best bet. They are known to have the most refined bore, and stability of pitch/intonation in all registers. Those are the two most popular brands; you may find one that you find suits your needs better, I don't know. One thing though: be sure to play the heck out of any instrument before you buy it. Put it through a rigourous few days of playing (if they allow you to take it home) attempting to put it through as many difficult passages as you can, and playing the full dynamic range possible...then consider buying it.

As a consensus amongst players, there are four standout brands in no particular order:

Keilwerth (not ST taiwaneese models)
Selmer Paris
Yamaha
Yanagisawa

These receive many accolades as far as sturdyness of build, intonation, tone, and response. These are for new models, here's some recommendations for vintage that you might hear from divers sax resources:

Conn 10M
Buescher 400 Top Hat& Cane, Early Selmer 400s
Selmer Mk VI, early Mark 7
King Siversonic, Zephyr

Honorable Mention:

Jupiter Artist Series: These get my personal recommendation for overall value. They produce a good sound with no standout intonation issues.

I would say that any sax brand is a good brand. Personally I tried out several different brands. I tried Yamaha, Yamakazowa (misspelling sorry), and Cannonball. I liked the Cannonball. They are good saxes for the advanced players. There are a couple of different types of Cannonball. There is the all black, the black and silver, and the silver with gold keys. The Cannonball plays extremely well and you can hit all notes from low B flat to the third octave F sharp. Personally I can hit the notes higher than the F sharp, but requires a lot of practice and skill. Therefore try out the Cannonball. I think you will like it very much. :o)
