I just got a new sax for christmas, and I have played the clarinet for some while now. I try and play a low note (holding down all main keys) but it plays a high note. I am not holding down the register key. is there something wrong with my saxophone, or are all saxes like this?

This is common when switching from clarinet to sax. The clarinet embouchure is much too firm for playing the low notes on sax so soften your embouchure quite a bit for starters.

Low notes are rather notorious for the beginner due to the great expansion in the air collumn needed to fill the bottom of the conical bore. This is in stark contrast to the cylindrical clarinet.
