In the past when I was in high school, I played the tuba and sousaphone ( I play the flute, clarinet and oboe now).
The weight of a tuba and sousaphone are much heavier than a tenor sax.
I think a person of about 110 lb body weight can handle a tenor sax and even a tuba easily. If a tenor sax is too heavier for you, play the alto. You may also check if the adjustment of neck strap is correct.

I started playing sax a year ago after having played clarinet for several before that, and the thing to know is that it takes time to get used to the weight of a tenor. If you normally stand while playing, try sitting for awhile. Another thing you could try is to get a saxophone harness, instead of a regular neckstrap.
Like richard said, you could try the alto, but don't give up on tenor so soon.

I play the tenor saxophone and the clarinet im in grade 8 I have been playing the clarinet for 3 years and this is the first year I have played the tenor and im doing pretty well even though i can't read the notes. The tenor I think is really easy if you play the clarinet because they have alot in common.

yeah uh im about 110 lbs and play tenor in marching band... yes, i march with it for hours at a time... *gasp* oh no! I had only played high woodwinds before that, and I've found that after the one week of band camp I could handle it fine. Everyone is suggesting you try alto, but I think you should try bari. It'll make the tenor seem lighter.

I weigh about 95 pounds, and play tenor. I have been for about.. 5 months Just practice a little bit everyday, and it won't seem so heavy! I also just use a normal neckstrap :D

when i first started playing i didn't have a problem with the weight on the neck but on my thumb. Get a nack strap with a cushy part though i never had one my shelf and i have been playing for a while and it still hurts after a while and the stupid neck strap cuts in to my neck -_- not fun

If you start having real problems and a cushie neck strap isn't enough, try using a magic bag, or foam, (like a spounge) for a while, it helps.
