For a jazz band, I would perfer the soprano sax. I say this because the soprano sax has that sorta Kenny G feel to it and plus you can get really down with it when doing a solo or improving. It has that high pitch heart thumpin' feeling when it is played so that is my opinion. thank you for taking your time to read this.

well, being a soprano player, i can give an incite. soprano, well, your not going to get a lot of music for it. it seems to be rare that there is music. tenor may be an easier choice. there is a lot of music, and more people understand what it is supposed to sound like. when i hit a high C, people look at me thinking it supposed to be like an alto. but it's your choice. ask your self some questions. which sax would i like playing more? which sax sounds better to me? hope this helps.

The soprano is harder to play, but the tenor is heavier. They have two very different sounds: think wailing cat vs. chainsaw. Which do you prefer?

in traditional Jazz, there is much, much more call for Tenor.

Kenny G's stuff isn't exactly ensemble music, nor is it something a typical jazzband would aspire to play. If you aquired a soprano saxophone, the best you could hope for would be to play the rare clarinet part, if your instructor/group allowed it.

Alto, Baritone, or Tenor would all find regular use in a Jazz Band setting moreso than soprano.

Have enjoyed playing tenor and alto sax in several different bands for many years. Just recently bought a soprano and still experimenting. Of the three I love the deep tone and growl of the tenor for both jazz and big band charts. I am thinking the soprano has a lot of potential for certain types of music where I would normally use the tenor in the altisimo range. Totally different feel when it comes to the mouthpiece. Good luck

As a tenor player, i have to say tenor. :) It all really depends on waht kind of jazz band...if it's a high level band and your have the knowledge of music theory needed, you could just write your own soprano parts...but if you're talking a HS jazz band or something similar, tenor is hte way to go...you could use soprano to play solos on occasionally I suppose...our jazz band has a trombone player who also plays clarinet, and she does solos from time to time in our swing songs.

The Tenor is better for Jazz, for there's more selection for it, and it fits better. Take it from a Sax player.

Although I do favor the Soprano over the Tenor. The Tenor is used more for Jazz. And like others have already posted, there are not many parts for the Soprano. Soprano will be better if you have private lessons, or alot of solos. Hope this helps
