I am a beginning music teacher. I have a donated instrument in good condition that appears to be an e-flat clarinet. It is shorter than a b-flat and does not have the bell of an alto.
I have at my disposal a book for e-flat alto and 1 for b-flat. The student is practicing constantly with an e-flat alto book, but the fingerings aren't producing the notes given in the book.
I am a brass player, so this is not my area. I have had "experts" look at the clarinet and tell me it is an e-flat soprano clarinet. What book do I use? Fingering charts?
Please e-mail me at "pamdtoys@hotmail.com" if you can help me out on this. I would appreciate all assistance in this arena.

I'm no expert myself, but we have I knew a few sopranino clarinet players.
They just used the normal Bb clarinet study books. Like saxophonists, I think, tenor, soprano or alto, the basic is all the same, the main differences are in embouchure, air control and altissimo. And those are things you cannot learn out of a book....
Fingering charts are the same as the usual Bb clarinet, I was told (you can find them at this site). Just make sure you aren't mixing up German and French fingering systems (Albert vs Boehm).
But, as I said, I'm no expert myself (just a saxophonist that tries to play a bit of clarinet).

If it is an Eb Soprano, sometimes called a sopranino, then playing the note called 'C' with the left thumb and three fingerings covering holes should give you the note Eb. If it gives you D or C instead, then you have a D or C soprano. Such instruments exist.

I play the Eb soprano clarinet. And the fingering are the same, it is just in a different key. So when you are asked to play a Bb concert scale you count up and you would play a G(same fingerings - left hand, fingers 1 2 3 and 4) Good luck and I hope you enjoy it, because I know I sure do!

the saxophones are not the same, and neither are the clarinets. each saxophone and clarinet has a different embourchure. granted fingererings are the same in the respected families. use Eb alto bok as this book was made for an Eb instrument and will work well in a larger group.
